Daar is tans ’n woordestryd oor teologiese opleiding aan die gang. Om Henri Nouwen aan te haal en te parafraseer: Klink so bietjie na ’n woordestryd oor die Woord, terwyl gewone mense net een vraag het: Hoe kom ons nader aan God en mekaar?

Ek lees in Nouwen se Way of the heart, 1881:47 die volgende: (Lees asb mooi en versigtig.) Ek kan dit nie beter stel nie.

What else is the goal of theological education than to bring us closer to the Lord of God so that we may be more faithful to the great commandment to love him with al our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind, and our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37)? Seminaries and divinity schools must lead theology students into an ever-growing communion with God, with each other, and with their fellow human beings. Theological education is meant to form our whole person toward an increasing conformity with the mind of Christ so that our way of praying and our way of believing will be one.

But is this what takes place? Often it seems that we who study or teach theology find ourselves entangled in such complex network of discussions, debates, and arguments about God and “God-issues” that a simple conversation with God or a simple presence to God has become practically impossible. Our heightened verbal ability, which enables us to make many distinctions, has sometimes become a poor substitute for a single-minded commitment to the Word who is life. If there is a crisis in theological education, it is first and foremost a crisis of the word. This is not to say that critical intellectual work and the subtle distinctions it requires have no place in theological training. But when our words are no longer a reflection of the divine Word in and through whom the world has been created and redeemed, they lose their grounding and become as seductive and misleading as the words used to sell Geritol.

There was a time when the obvious milieu for theological education was the monastery. There words were born out of silence and could lead one deeper into silence. Although monasteries are no longer the most common places of theological education, silence remains as indispensable today as it was in the past. The Word of God is born out of the eternal silence of God, and it is to this Word out of silence that we want to be witnesses.

Hanekom is nie baie duidelik wat hy met hierdie plasing wil sê nie, maar dit lyk of hy wil sê dat ons minder moet debateer oor die presiese teologie wat by die teologiese fakulteite onderrig word en dat ons meer moet leer hoe om God lief te hê.

Die vraag is: Hoe bewys ’n mens liefde aan God?

Liefde vir God is sinoniem met liefde vir Sy Woord (die Bybel).

As teologiese fakulteite dus dwaalleer verkondig, is dit nie liefde vir God nie. Daarom al die debatte wat tans heers oor die teologiese fakulteite.

Op dieselfde dag het ’n artikel oor Andries van Aarde in die koerant verskyn (kyk Hy is ‘radikaal soos Jesus’ en ’n ‘aktivis vir geregtigheid’). Van Aarde is steeds by die teologiese fakulteit van die Universiteit van Pretoria betrokke en het op ’n stadium klas gegee vir teologiese studente van die NG Kerk. ’n Mens wonder hoe Hanekom hieroor voel. Moet ’n mens nie hare kloof oor wat Van Aarde aan studente oordra nie en moet ’n mens eerder by Van Aarde leer hoe om God lief te hê?

Dit is baie interessant dat Hanekom vir Henri Nouwen aanhaal. Henri Nouwen (1932-1996) was a Katolieke priester wat met sy homoseksualiteit geworstel het. Alhoewel hierdie stryd deur diegene naby aan hom bekend was, het Nouwen nooit in die openbaar as homoseksueel geïdentifiseer nie, dus het hy gekies om selibaat te bly.

Deur selibaat te bly het Henri Nouwen ware liefde vir God bewys (kyk ook Die Bybel oor ware liefde vir God). ’n Mens het respek daarvoor. Die feit dat Hanekom egter nie hierdie feit in sy plasing noem nie, laat die idee dat dit nie die boodskap is wat hy wil oordra nie.
